Holidating: This Season, Why Not Give The Gift of Charity? By Kristan Turns

“Holidating” is an ongoing Match.com blog series focusing on data from a recent Match.com survey on singles and the holiday season. Stay tuned for more posts examining the data in the upcoming week!

With the lights hung and ornaments arranged, shoppers discover themselves at that point in the season where they’ve begun frantically hunting for gifts to place under trees. But what to buy?? The determination to find “The Perfect Present” certainly affects many whose holidays are deeply rooted in the tradition of gift-giving.

Singles aren’t immune to the seasonal chaos of overcrowded shopping mall parking lots. 45% look forward to giving gifts to others as their favorite holiday tradition, but might encounter a tricky tightrope when selecting just the right items. After only a few dates, most women are unlikely to expect a diamond tiara, and it might be a very lopsided exchange if she elects to give her partner a “glad-we’re-friends” card. Fortunately, there’s a great solution to avoiding this kind of mess while also celebrating the season of giving: donating to a charitable cause. Continue reading

I always said, “Those dating sites are stupid. Who needs those things?” Laughed every time I saw the commercial.

I had just moved back to my hometown in Mississippi. I didn’t know anyone after being away for a few years. Out of boredom, I suddenly had the urge to give the free trial a run and see how it went for me on match.com. I really didn’t have any hopes to meet anyone but during the free trial, you only get so many features for free. No way was I paying to meet someone online. That’s what I thought. I’d met only about 2 people and in my first week something told me to just buy a month membership, what would it hurt. So, I did. I kept coming across this one profile. Of course I’d read it a few times and move on because he lived too far away, but something always drew me back there. A few days in, I received a wink from that somewhat intriguing person and thought, “Ya know what, I’ll wink back just to see what happens next”. Continue reading

Love isn’t easy to find. Sure, it’s a big world out there with hundreds of chance encounters and crossed paths every day. But the idea that one of those random people might be the one that you are going to end up spending the rest of your life with… well, that doesn’t seem nearly as likely. Or at least I didn’t think so. Continue reading

Featured Success Couple: Lauren and Ron

We shouldn’t have even met online through match. I was hesitant to try an online dating site, but a friend convinced me to put up a profile. After many emails and winks, I finally received an email from someone that really caught my eye. He had a great sense of humor and seemed extremely genuine. He didn’t show up in any of my match picks, but that was because his age was one year older than my range that I had picked. He happened to notice my picture in the “New to Match” section.  Continue reading

Featured Success Couple: Dave and Christa

I actually saw Dave over five years before I met him on match.com. I was a nurse in the ICU, and he was a doctor. I never said hello because I was too shy, but I thought he was very attractive and had a kind smile.

Five years later and after law school, multiple relationships, and moving to a different city, I decided to take a look at match.com, not knowing what to expect. I at first did not sign up to be a member; I just took a look at singles in my area. And upon perusing through, there he was – Dave’s smiling headshot. I joined instantly, but did not put up a picture. I sent him an email, introducing myself asking him if he would like to go out to dinner.

He didn’t write me back for two weeks. When he did, I was elated. Every time he emailed me, it made my day. On our first date, we both wore the same color blue t-shirts and blue jeans. We were inseparable ever since that day. Continue reading

Featured Success Couple: Gunnar and Christin

We had both only been on the site for a short while when we connected. We were both giving it a shot to try something new. Let’s face it, you don’t meet your future wife or husband in the grocery store! As much as we’d all like it to be that easy, it’s not. Meeting them in the bar isn’t all that appealing either when you’ve done a little growing up and figured out what you want in life. Continue reading

It’s funny how some things work out- I was in the middle of training for my 3rd Ironman triathlon, and was out on the Chicago lakefront path for an 18 miler. Somewhere around mile 15 I saw a tall, good-looking guy stopped at a water fountain and immediately noticed his Ironman tattoo. I made it my mission to catch up with him. We leap-frogged back and forth a bit before stopping at the next water fountain to awkwardly chat. We exchanged stories about triathlon and complained about how hot it was that day, and the entire time I was trying to come up with ways to extend the conversation to give him enough time to ask for my number. Much to my dismay he didn’t! We parted ways that day, and I spent the next few days referring to him as the “cute Ironman that didn’t get my digits.”
